Jenny's Japanese CATalogue box

At the end of 2024 I began a journal as part of a PaperArtsy blog post hoping to record and store memories of a family trip to Japan. I'm sure so many of us have these 'unfinished projects', but this year I'm on a mission to get them completed. So when the new CATalogue Box was announced by Maggie and Kay it was the perfect opportunity to do just that. Rather than make pages why not add photos and journaling on cards!!

I began by cutting decorative cards with the old Walrus Flip Flap Dies - the new Walrus Tag Dies would also work beautifully for this. If like me you don’t have black card handy you can always cheat by using a black pen around the edge of other card.

Decorative paper I’d made previously was die cut to cover the back of each photo card and photos were resized and printed to use on the front of them.

With both sides covered I marked the centre point of the base of each card by popping the die back over the cards and using the handy notch as a guide.

Using Tiger Tape to hold the Index Hole Die in place I ran this through my machine.

If, like mine, your cutting pads are ridged from constant use they may leave marks on your cards – you can remove these by running your cards back through your machine with two ‘untouched’ plates. I always keep a couple handy for just this purpose.

To create dimensional pockets for the back of some of the cards I used one of the Walrus Tag dies to cut a thin line from four Walrus Pocket die cuts

Layering these strips up I glued them to the back of a full Walrus Pocket die cut and added a decorative layer on the front. This could then be added to the back of one of the divider cards to hold little souvenirs from our trip.

Here you can see how I took some of the previously completed journal pages and die cut them with the Walrus dies to decorate more cards.

To finish I painted the CATalogue Box with Cherry Red Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylic Paint and ran a gold pen around the edges. I may add some stencilling to the outside of the box at some point in the future but for now this felt sufficient.

And so, the photo cards and other decorative cards were ready to be slotted inside the CATalogue Box. Here are some of them;

The back of all of the photo cards is decorated in a restrained way so I can add some journalling to remember highlights and memories from the trip. This would be a great place to use some of those plain solids you often get to compliment decorative paper collections.

I stamped, stencilled and painted some decorative cards to act as dividers to show the locations we visited.

It’s nice to mix things up a little with different size cards in your box; I wanted to add some drawings I’d done of buildings in Kyoto so cut them into rectangles and used the Index Hole die in the same way as before.

I hope this has shown you some ideas for using the new CATalogue Box as a way of storing memories of a special trip or occasion. Whilst I love using paints and stamps to decorate mine you could easily use decorative paper collections in the same way to produce beautiful results.

What a fabulous way to store your holiday memories. If Jenny has inspired you to get creative with your holiday photos, you can find all of the links you need below, along with links to our CoolKatz social media platforms.
