Sometimes when I get a new kit to put together, I take a few days
planning ahead on how I want the decoration to be. Not with this kit, I
knew exactly how I wanted it to look from the start. So, within ten
minutes of arriving the Corner Room Box was put together and
drying..........

I knew that I wanted a tiled floor made from terracotta with a small
patterned tile in-between. I also wanted them to look worn from many
years of wear and also a little whitened where the salts had risen
through them.

Using a mix of both the 1/12th and 1/24th sizes of the Floor Tiles I cut
the 1/12th square terracotta colours and the Brick Tile in an off white
shade of card.

I needed a square tile for the corners and the 1/24th square cut from
the same off white card was the perfect fit for the pattern.

To add the star I used a pale grey ink and one of the stamps from the
1/24th Text Stamp Set. These are designed to go on miniature cards, but
they are fabulous for creating patterns on floor tiles as well.

I added a piece of grey card to the base of the floor and laid the tiles
over the top to create the pattern and look like grout, the miniature
spacer made it simple to get the spacing just right. I took my time
gluing them down as I went and to finish off, I dry brushed white gesso
over the top and a little grey ink where there would naturally be more wear.

The walls are covered in Scrapbooking paper from my stash. They were dry
brushed with white gesso, left to dry then I added a little grey ink to
distress them and make them less of a bright clean paper.

I wanted an ornate door and I also chose to make it a double door just
like most French Chateau or Manor Houses had back in the day. I found
the centre and carefully using my trusty saw scored about halfway
through the door. Next using a Needle File (triangular) I carefully
filed to give the illusion of there being two separate doors.

After cutting out several strips using the Purrfect Precision Strip Dies
I created the panels on my doors, leaving a space in between for a couple
of metal embellishments that would be used for the door knobs to sit in.
I painted the entire door and frame in white gesso, waited until it
dried and then glued it into place on the wall.

I decided to add a little more decoration above the door using an off
cut of MDF, this was the perfect size for another of the Metal Filigree
embellishment to be added to. Once dry I added more white gesso over
the top and left it to dry overnight.
I dry brushed the door and frame using a mixture of turquoise and blue
paints, and once dry, dry brushed old gold paint over the top to pick out
the details in the panelling and ornate filigree. I had already added a
couple of flat backed pearls to the centres of the filigree for handles.
To finish off I cut out strips of pale grey card using the Purrfect
Finish Fauxgrain Strips to create the illusion of ribbons around the
edges of the doors and skirting boards. This used to be a common
practice in French Chateau decor, can you imagine how long those ribbons
would have been? And as a final finish I added the Fauxgrain strips
around the entire edge of the Room to neaten the edges up and hide the
MDF. Those strips are the purrfect size to hide it!
So that’s where my room is at the moment, so where are the shelves and
window you may ask...........................well you'll have to wait
for those so keep an eye out for a future blog post!
